As a beauty tester and commerce reporter, I’ve tried pretty much everything, from the luxury shelves at Sephora to the travel-size bins at Target. After accumulating enough serums, mascaras, moisturizers, foundations and hair products to fill a small bathroom (or several), I’ve developed some thoughts about where it *actually* makes sense to spend more.
Because here’s the thing: a higher price tag doesn’t automatically mean a better product. Sometimes, that $10 drugstore find performs just as well as — or even better than — a $50 alternative. Other times, I’ve tested a luxury formula and immediately understood what the extra money was buying.
That’s why I don’t think there’s a one-size-fits-all answer to the drugstore-versus-high-end debate. The best place to save or splurge can change dramatically depending on the beauty category, the ingredients, how often you use a product and what you actually want it to do.
So, I’m breaking it all down category by category: what I’d buy at the drugstore, what I’d splurge on at a beauty counter and what I think you can skip altogether at either price point.

Cleansers
Cleanser is one of the categories where I’m especially reluctant to spend a fortune, since it spends so little time on the skin. That said, I make an exception when a formula does double duty exfoliating, removing waterproof makeup or just leaving my skin noticeably happier after washing.
CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser
Save: Like most people, CeraVe lives on my bathroom counter and hardly ever leaves. I’ve been using its Foaming Facial Cleanser since middle school and, after reviewing all of the brand’s sensitive skin-friendly options, this one is the best by far. It removes impurities and is the one I love using for a gentle option that fares well with my serums and moisturizers. The best part? It’s less than $20 and lasts a long time.
Mara Algae Enzyme Cleansing Oil Makeup Remover
Splurge: “I’m absolutely lazy by the time it’s time to wash off makeup and sunblock in the evening,” Erica Radol, Page Six commerce reporter, shared. “This multi-tasker oil-based cleanser melts every last bit of makeup off while not needing a second wash.”
It also has fruit enzymes for mild exfoliation and can be used for Gua Sha or dermaplaning. “My dry-leaning, sensitive skin loves it — and it doesn’t dry my skin like so many cleansers, making it worth the price tag,” Radol added.
The Face Shop Rice Water Bright Foaming Cleanser
Save: I flew to South Korea last year and have held The Face Shop’s formulas close to my chest since then. They’re hydrating, effective and give me that glass skin finish that Korean skincare is well-known for. This cleanser is less than $20, foams well and leaves my skin clean and refreshed. If you love CeraVe but also want to foray into K-beauty, this is what I recommend.
Serums
Serums are where I’m more willing to spend because they’re designed to deliver concentrated ingredients and usually stay on my skin all day or night. But a higher price isn’t enough for me; I want a formula that actually makes a visible difference.
Olay Super Serum
Save: Olay is a legacy brand that truly works for 20-somethings and 50-somethings. It’s trusty, effective and renews your skin, which is what to look for if you don’t want to spend $100+ on a serum. I love how this buzzy formula is actually worth the hype; it contains niacinamide, vitamin C and collagen peptides to give me that plump, juicy finish that makes me skip makeup on most days.
Medicube One Day Exosome Shot 2000
Save: “I was devoted to Sunday Riley’s Good Genes before trying this, but the One Day Exosome Shot 2000 is not only significantly cheaper but better — IMO,” Holly J Coley, commerce deputy editor, shared. “Its spicules resurface the skin, leaving it smoother and brighter. It stings a bit (there are basically little needle-shaped things in the serum that deliver the active ingredients), but it’s 100% worth it.”
Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair
Splurge: Talk about a serum that has been trusted by generations of users. As a beauty tester, the Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair is akin to Holy Water for Catholics: necessary, purifying and refreshing to your soul (genuinely). Its anti-aging power is second to none, and I love chatting with my mom and mother-in-law about our shared love of this formula.
Eye Creams
Eye cream is one of those categories where I’m skeptical of extravagant claims, but I have found some formulas that make my under-eyes look smoother, brighter and more hydrated. I’d rather spend strategically here than assume the most expensive little jar automatically works best.
Anua PDRN Caffeine Rejuvenating Eye Cream
Save: I’m beyond impressed with this Anua eye cream. Its silky, dreamy texture glides and I’m truly addicted to using it! I can’t believe it’s only $20, and it’s been the product I’ve been showing off to friends and family for its price point, smoothing power and gasp-worthy blendability.
Clinique Smart Clinical Repair Wrinkle-Correcting Eye Cream
Splurge: “Some say eye creams don’t work, but I’m not kidding when I say that I see a noticeable difference in my under-eye area when I use this,” Coley shared. “It has Sigesbekia extract to help with skin density, and peptides and hyaluronic acid, which must be some miracle potion when put together. I apply it at night and I’m telling you, my eyes look so good the morning after.”
Sarah Creal Firm Offer Ultimate 4-in-1 Peptide Eye Cream
Splurge: I think more people need to yap about this brand, because its infusion of peptides is unbelievably nourishing and addicting to use. I have no problem using a $10 cleanser, a $10 moisturizer and then this line-soother as the main event. Trust me, it’s the brightening, skin-soothing multitasker that’s worth your skincare investment.
Moisturizers
Moisturizer is a category where I’ve found excellent options at practically every price point. I’ll save when a simple formula does the job, but I’m willing to splurge if the texture, ingredients and finish make me genuinely excited to use it every day.
Medicube Collagen Jelly Cream
Save: “I think everyone and their mother has used Medicube at this point, and after reviewing the entire brand, this moisturizer is that glass skin-producing gem that I find myself reaching for most. The fact that more than 30,000 Amazon shoppers purchase it monthly is proof, and its collagen- and niacinamide-containing formula alone gives my skin the most photogenic glow. Plus, there’s plenty of product in the jar, giving you an incredible value for your dollar.
Alpyn Bakuchiol & Ceramides Melt Moisturizer
Splurge: If you follow my coverage, you know that Alpyn is my holy grail skincare brand. Everything is purely formulated for sensitive skin and the ingredients are wildcrafted in Jackson Hole, so you can’t get more natural than that! This cream contains a gentler retinol alternative, bakuchiol, and I love using this at night.
COSRX 92% Advanced Snail Mucin All-in-One Cream
Save: Snail mucin is the ingredient that truly won’t die in K-beauty, and for a good reason. It yields that dewy end result, and this is dynamite for anyone with dry skin who wants a noticeable glow after use. It’s at an accessible price point and a great product to try if you already love its bestselling Snail Mucin Power Essence.
SPF
Sunscreen is one category where I’m less interested in the drugstore-versus-luxury debate and more interested in whether I’ll actually wear the product every day. The best SPF for me is the one that feels good enough that I don’t resent putting it on.
Well People Daygleamer Mineral Sunscreen Serum SPF 34
Save: I love the Well People Daygleamer Mineral Sunscreen Serum SPF 34 because it feels lightweight and comfortable instead of heavy or greasy. Its serum-like texture makes it easy to layer into my everyday routine without that typical thick sunscreen feel.
Round Lab Birch Juice Mild-Up UV LOCK SPF 50+
Save: Purchased in South Korea, the absorbency and lightweight feel of this SPF still impress me. For under $20, it belongs in everyone’s routine and it allows you to feel confident sans makeup. It’s cosmetically elegant and compatible with a multitude of skin types.
Revision Skincare Intellishade Matte SPF 45 Tinted Sunscreen
Splurge: I’ll admit, this is one of the only sunscreens I believe in splurging on. It was recommended to me by many dermatologists I’ve interviewed, and it’s a handy two-in-one complexion product for someone who wants a little bit more than invisible sun protection. It’s worth the splurge because it’s buildable and completely eliminates the need for foundation.
Face Masks
Face masks are where I’m happiest to mix and match. I’ll splurge on a mask when it offers a technology or experience I can’t easily replicate, but for disposable sheet masks, I usually want a little luxury without the luxury price.
Abib Collagen Gel Masks
Save: I’ve tested many a sheet mask, and boy can I tell you the vast majority does not stay put. It’s really annoying, because all I want to do is unwind and have the mask sit comfortably on my face for 20 minutes as directed — not slide off into the page of my paperback. Luckily, Abib exists, and they’re my favorite budget-friendly sheet masks so far. It leaves my skin glowy, hydrated and ready to catch those ZZZs before bed. Trust me, this four-pack will be your new addiction, too.
Biodance Rejuvenating Caviar PDRN Real Deep Mask
Save: “I don’t tend to splurge as much when it comes to disposable face and eye masks,” Hannah Southwick, Page Six commerce associate editor, admitted. “Biodance’s PDRN mask feels much more luxurious than its $15 price tag will suggest, and always leaves my skin feeling radiant and hydrated.”
Shark CryoGlow LED Face Mask
Splurge: LED face masks can seem daunting if you’ve never used one, but Shark’s is simply amazing for beginners and anyone looking to customize their nightly anti-aging routine. The best part for me is its integrated cooling eye patches (more in my full review) and how the mask is comfortable and a breeze to use. Carrie Berk, commerce reporter, also recommends this mask.
“I’ve done cryotherapy for muscle recovery before, so a Cryo mask instantly caught my attention,” Berk shared. “This one provides a cooling burst that brightens, tightens and even eliminates the appearance of acne, depending on which settings you use. I feel a bit like a robot wearing it around my apartment, but the beauty benefits make it totally worth it.”
Bodycare: Oils, Washes & Lotions
Body care is one of my favorite places to spend a little extra because fragrance and texture can turn an ordinary shower into something that feels genuinely indulgent. Still, I’ve found plenty of drugstore body products that perform beautifully, so I’m selective about where I splurge.
eos Cashmere Whipped Oil Body Butter
Save: “No matter how many body creams, lotions and butters I try, I always return to my tried and true eos body butter in the viral Vanilla Cashmere scent,” Angela Tricarico, commerce streaming reporter, recommends. “I love this body butter because it absorbs quickly, isn’t greasy despite containing oil, and I find it to be super moisturizing. Good body butters don’t have to break the bank and eos proves it.”
Naturium The Glow Getter Multi-Oil Body Wash
Save: If you want a luxury-leaning body wash that feels like it would cost $100, this one from Naturium is your match. I’ve tried pretty much all of Naturium’s body washes and have come to the conclusion that this is the most hydrating and best for those who want a flattering glow.
Cyklar Sensorial Multi-Oil Body Wash Cleanser
Splurge: “Somewhere between a steal and splurge, this Cyklar body wash truly makes every day a bit of a spa treatment,” Radol shared. “I’ve never had my skin so soft after showering! And though a little pricey, the large bottle lasts for months, and the scents are to die for. I’ve used (and loved) the Sacred Santal scent, a woodsy, warm amber-vanilla, but have Vanilla Verve in my cart. I fell in love with that fragrance after scooping up the decadent body oil, which is a fave of Hailey Bieber and perfect for fall.”
Shampoos
Shampoo is a surprisingly personal category because what works beautifully for one head of hair can leave another feeling completely wrong. I’ll save on basic cleansing, but I’m willing to spend more when a shampoo addresses a specific hair concern or gives me results I can actually see.
Herbal Essences Body Envy Shampoo
Save: I’ll be honest, shampoo is one category I always have a drugstore rendition of in my shower, accompanied by a high-end one (I like to switch out my products so my hair doesn’t get tired of the same formula). I’ve been loving the citrus scent and how wonderfully this Herbal Essences shampoo cleanses my scalp. Ten out of 10, recommend.
Prose Custom Haircare
Splurge: “One of the best haircare decisions I ever made was switching to Prose,” Tricarico highlighted. “Yes, it’s pricey, but my hair has never been softer or healthier! I love how customizable it is and the fact that you’re able to continue refining your formula is what keeps me coming back to Prose over and over again.”

Medicube Rosemary PDRN Cooling Thickening Shampoo
Save: Yes, Medicube has haircare, and yes, it’s amazing. I love everything from the minty scent to the pump dispenser and my scalp always feels so nurtured after each use. Oh, and it contains PDRN, which is Korea’s anti-aging secret, so I love that there’s some skincare infused with its rosemary ingredient, which is recommended for hair growth.
Conditioners & Hair Masks
Conditioners and hair masks are two categories where I’m more willing to spend than shampoo because the product actually sits on my hair and can make a noticeable difference in softness, shine and manageability. When I’m dealing with humidity-prone hair, I want the formula that makes styling easier afterward.
14th Night The Nourishing Hair Mask
Splurge: This is a hair mask I have been using for years and it’s been a revolutionary experience for my hair. It smells amazing, contains natural, *nourishing* ingredients (aptly named, I should say) and adds a remarkable softness and shine. I definitely recommend buying this and using it once a week. Your hair will certainly notice a difference!
L’Oreal Paris Elvive Glycolic + Gloss Shine Boosting Conditioner
Save: Do me one favor and *please* don’t sleep on the L’Oreal Paris Elvive collection. It’s the best for shine and is around $10. It pairs well with any shampoo, works on any hair type and is one of the most moisturizing options I’ve used — enough said.
Kérastase Gloss Absolu Conditioner
Splurge: ““This creamy conditioner soothes my parched ends and gives a glossy look to my hair without weighing it down,” Radol highlighted. “My hair tends to get frizzy easily in East Coast humidity, but if I use this, it waves more so than just poofy, a big win for my color-treated hair.”
Heat Protectants & Styling Products
Styling products and heat protectants are where I care less about the prestige of the bottle and more about whether the formula protects my hair and helps me get the style I want. I’ll spend more when the product replaces multiple steps, but I’m perfectly happy to save on straightforward heat protection, too.
Bumble and bumble. Heat Shield Thermal Protection Hair Mist
Splurge: This heat protectant has been my ride-or-die for years, and there are so many benefits this small but mighty bottle holds: shine-booster, frizz-reducer, detangler and hair refresher. Because of its multi-purpose formula, it’s easy to justify the near-$40 price if you normally shop at the drugstore for hair styling products.
Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream
Save: Usually, Moroccanoil is in the luxury category, but this styling product is secretly under $20. If you want something to smooth and add some definition to your hair, this will make a world of difference.
Olaplex No. 7 Bonding Oil
Splurge: “Olaplex turned me from a hair oil skeptic into a believer and now I can’t go without it,” Tricarico said. “I’ve tried a few different hair oils at different price points, but nothing beats Olaplex. In addition to heat protection, I find that Olaplex keeps my hair smoother, softer and less frizzy between washes.”
Blow Dryers & Heat Tools
This is one category where I’ve learned that price and performance don’t always move together. I’m willing to spend on a blow dryer or tool I use constantly, but I also love finding an inexpensive option that delivers the same basic styling payoff.
Shark Glossi Blow Dryer Brush
Splurge: After owning 20+ blow dryers and putting the major ones to the test in the past half-decade, I can tell you straight up that this Shark blow-dryer brush is one of the best-in-class models. It works on every hair type, provides great tension and bouncy volume. It’s an investment, yet still more affordable than stylers upwards of $700.
Conair Instant Heat 3/4″ Curling Iron Brush
Save: “I swear this under-$20 hair styling tool gets me more compliments than any $100+ tool I’ve tried,” Meaghan Seward, commerce senior strategist of audience optimization and discovery, shared. “Thermal brushes have been trending for being as easy to use as they are impactful, and I’m here to tell you you don’t need to spend a lot of money to get those results. Conair – yes, the 90s-2000s drugstore brand I grew up on – still makes quality and affordable hair tools, and this is one of their best.”
Shark FlexStyle IonCurl
Splurge: I’ve had my Shark FlexStyle for years, but the brand recently debuted its IonCurl, which I reviewed at length. Yes, it looks like a weapon, but it’s a secret weapon (wink, wink) for getting your hair to look salon-level. It blow-dries and styles with its myriad attachments, replacing the need for three standalone tools.
Primers, Foundations, Tinted Moisturizers, Powders & Setting Sprays
Complexion is one of the few makeup categories where I’m often willing to pay more because the formula has such a huge impact on how everything else looks. Still, I don’t think every complexion step deserves a luxury price, especially when a drugstore product can disappear beautifully into my skin.
L’Oreal Paris True Match Lumi Glotion
Save: The iconic Lumi Glotion had its moment in the spotlight years ago, but I don’t think that sparkle ever dulled. It’s one of the most versatile products in my stash, functioning as a primer or a full-on complexion — whatever your heart desires! Because it’s so affordable, it’s always in my rotation. Oh, and of course, it gives major glow, just read my review for proof.
Armani Luminous Silk Foundation
Splurge: “I tend to spend more on complexion products; foundation is hard to get right!” Southwick noted. “Armani has been my go-to lately — but don’t just take it from me, countless celebrities and makeup artists swear by it, too. It offers enough coverage for occasional breakouts, while still providing a natural, skin-like finish.”
e.l.f. Power Grip Primer + 4% Niacinamide
Save: I’m pretty sure e.l.f.’s product development and marketing team never sleeps, because they’re always whipping out some of the most affordable lookalikes to high-end products. This primer is super hydrating and allows any product I apply afterward to stay put. For only $11, I’d say it’s worth the grab if you’re in the market for a new primer.
Concealers
Concealer is one of my favorite categories to save on because there are so many affordable formulas with impressive coverage and blendability. I’m happy to spend more only when a formula gives me a particularly beautiful finish or solves a specific under-eye problem.
Nyx Professional Makeup Bare with Me Concealer Serum
Save: Because I’m more likely to splurge on an eye cream, this $10 concealer from Nyx is my norm. It works pretty spectacularly at covering dark circles and brightening, and isn’t too goopy like most other drugstore concealers.
Nars Soft Matte Complete Full Coverage Longwear Concealer
Splurge: If you have acne-prone skin or want to contour more like a pro, this is the concealer I recommend. It’s great for inevitable blemishes or discoloration, and is a staple in my makeup bag whenever I need it ASAP.
Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser
Save: “Maybelline’s Instant Age Rewind Concealer is a staple in my makeup bag, and ridiculously affordable,” Seward shared. “It couldn’t be easier to apply and blend, and has good coverage and blendability for the price point.”
Bronzers
Bronzer is another category where drugstore formulas have seriously raised the bar. I’m willing to splurge when the shade, texture and blendability are exceptional, but I don’t think I need to spend a lot to get believable warmth.
DIBS Beauty Desert Island Duo
Splurge: At nearly $40, this sounds expensive for a bronzer — but you’re also getting blush on the flip side! The way this product applies and blends is incredible, and the result is a natural finish you won’t stop bragging about.
Physicians Formula Murumuru Butter Bronzer
Save: For less than $15, this bronzer swipes on beautifully. The compact is massive, so you’re snagging a beauty bargain that will last for a full year in your makeup bag. If you want to be sun-kissed without the orange, grab this drugstore powder.
LYS Beauty No Limits Cream Bronzer and Contour Stick
Splurge: An in-between product of saving and splurging, the LYS Beauty bronzer stick is the creamiest one I’ve tested. Its chiseled edge makes it easy to swipe on in seconds, and it lasts pretty much the entire day.
Blushes
Blush is one category where I think both sides of the price spectrum can deliver. Since I tend to use a relatively small amount at a time, I’m usually looking for a formula that blends easily and lasts rather than a fancy compact.
Clinique Chubby Cream Blush Stick
Splurge: Depending on how you look at it, spending more than $20 is an investment for a blush. That said, this one is completely worth it. It allows you to build up the color and have it flush your cheeks in the best way. The shade variety is great, too.
Charlotte Tilbury Unreal Healthy Glow Blush Stick
Splurge: Charlotte Tilbury hits the jackpot with her camera-ready glowy products, but this one is next-level. This cream blush is the easiest to swipe on and have it last with a stunning rosy finish. It’s a splurge, but one you’ll use up to the very end.
Milani Baked Blush
Save: For a traditional powder blush that won’t break the bank, Milani’s powder blush is one of my favorites. It’s great for sensitive skin and functions like a $50 option from Sephora. For that price, buy four of these.
Eyeshadow
Eyeshadow is where I think personal preference matters most: some people want a huge palette, while others need one or two reliable shades. I’ll save when I’m looking for everyday color, but I’m willing to splurge for a palette with exceptional texture and shade variety.
Julep 101 Crème-to-Powder Eyeshadow Stick
Save: I’ve gone through multiple of these, and it saves you precious money and wasted product instead of buying a full-on palette with some colors you may not even use! All you need is a champagne shade and a light brown shade and voilà — you have an easy, swipe-on, creamy look that works for both day and night.
Anastasia Beverly Hills Soft Glam Eyeshadow Palette
Splurge: I’ve been using this eyeshadow palette for years and the pigmentation is amazing. It’s neutral enough to serve as your everyday makeup palette but fun enough to go from day to night fo an event. Its staying power is phenomenal and it’s certainly worth splurging on.
Urban Decay Naked 3 Mini Eyeshadow Palette
Save: Depending on how you look at it, this mini palette is saving you money on a palette that may be $50 to $75. The neutrals make this palette extremely versatile, and it hails from a premium brand that’s not costing you a quarter of your paycheck.
Eyeliners
I’m unwilling to overspend on eyeliners because I go through them quickly and tend to have strong opinions about the application. For me, a great liner needs to glide on, stay where I put it and make getting ready easier.
Lancôme Idôle Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner
Splurge: While more expensive than high-end eyeliners, it’s not edging on $50. This liner is ultra-precise and doesn’t budge. Because of its squared packaging, it’s also ergonomic to hold in your hand and apply.
Nyx Epic Ink Eyeliner
Save: For only $10, this Nyx eyeliner is phenomenal and is better than most high-end ones I’ve tried. The color selection is well-varied and it’s also well-pigmented without being streaky or goopy.
Clinique Quickliner for Eyes Intense
Splurge: If you’re more of an eyeliner pencil gal, the Clinique Quickliner for Eyes Intense is one of the best I’ve tried, namely because of the built-in smudger and the natural look it provides.
Mascaras
Mascara is one category where I’m firmly in the save camp most of the time. Since mascara has a relatively short shelf life and there are so many excellent affordable formulas, I need a pretty compelling reason to spend more.
Tarte Tartelette Tubing Mascara
Splurge: The number of times I have raved about this mascara? I’ve lost count. It never fails me and if I’m willing to splurge on something other than my Essence or Maybelline mascaras, this is my top pick for lengthening.
Maybelline Volum’ Express The Rocket Mascara
Save: “I’ve tried my fair share of pricey mascaras — that always come well-recommended by friends and celebrities alike – but I always find myself coming back to my tried-and-true favorite since discovering it in high school: Maybelline Rocket Volum,” Seward notes. “It’s easy to apply evenly, the formula doesn’t clump or flake, and it delivers length and volume so insane that I’ve often been accused of wearing falsies.”
You can’t beat the price for the value. Pro tip: always buy the “blackest black” shade for the most impactful effect, per Seward.
Essence Lash Princess False Lash Effect Mascara
Save: I’ll say it once and I’ll say it again…I can’t believe this mascara is only $5. Its lifted effect is the most natural I’ve tried, and I’ve gone through multiple tubes of this for its price point, wand and flattering look. Don’t just take it from me; more than 418,000 Amazon shoppers rave-reviewed it (as did I)
Lip Products
Lip products are probably where I’m most comfortable mixing drugstore and high-end because the category is so broad. I’ll splurge on a formula or treatment that feels genuinely special, but I’m also perfectly happy to save on everyday color, gloss and lip oils.
Charlotte Tilbury “Pillow Talk Fair” Lipstick
Splurge: If you have fair skin, this is the most beautiful shade and formula to use for any occasion. Paired with Charlotte’s signature “Pillow Talk Fair” lip liner, it’s the combo I reach for most often, topped with a clear lip gloss, of course. When you find the ideal shade for your complexion, it’s worth splurging on.
e.l.f. Glow Reviver Lip Oil
Save: “Your lip oil doesn’t need to break the bank to do its job,” Tricarico notes. “I’m a huge fan of e.l.f. products in general, but the Glow Reviver Lip Oil is one of my all-time favorites, and once I’ve purchased multiple shades — seriously, I have one for every bag. It’s glossy without being sticky and never dries my lips out. My favorite is the Crystal Clear shade, perfect for layering over your lip combo of the day, but you can’t go wrong with any of them!”
Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask
