When I signed up to run the Berlin Marathon, I wasn’t aware I would be training in a heat wave.

This is my third-ever fall marathon, and I’m used to gearing up in warm summer weather. But I’ve never faced this type of preparation before: hitting the streets in 100-degree temps, dressing for 98% humidity. The other day, I even needed to move my 14-mile long run indoors because of NYC air-quality concerns.

This training block has forced me to become a warm-weather runner. I’ve adopted ice bandanas for the first time, incorporated way more electrolytes into my routine to replenish sweat and even traded in my clunky running belt for a lightweight, handheld water bottle.

It’s been a lot of trial and error, but now, two months out from my trip to Germany, I feel like I’ve built myself a superhero tool kit of products to conquer the heat.

After all, last year’s race in Berlin saw unseasonably hot weather up to 80 degrees Fahrenheit — it’s better to be safe and prepared for anything.

Here are some of the top cooling products I swear by for marathon training in the heat.

Carrie Berk

This has and always will be my No. 1 sneaker for races. Three years ago, I stress fractured both shins, and my orthopedist recommended this cushioned, structured and supportive style to prevent future injuries. Knock on wood, I haven’t had any issues since I started wearing Brooks.

Lululemon Women's Beyondfeel Running Shoe
Carrie Berk

My tried-and-true pair of lululemon athletic shoes have traveled with me across the country for training. I love wearing these for shorter distances (5Ks, 10Ks, speed workouts) because of their effortless foam cushioning and supportive fit.

Plus, the mesh upper lets my feet breathe in case of sudden sunshine on my course.

Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Ice-Facial Cooling Mist
Carrie Berk

Spritz your way to cooler skin with this refreshing skin mist. It’s formulated with hydrating hyaluronic acid and caffeine to wake up tired, puffy eyes.

Rabbit Ice Bandana
Carrie Berk

My neck is one of the first parts of my body to break into sweat. This bandana keeps my skin cool thanks to its refreshing ice pocket. Plus, the brand’s fun colors and patterns are the unexpected pick-me-up I didn’t know I needed after 3-plus hours of running.

HydraPak SkyFlask Speed - Collapsible Handheld Running Water Bottle
Carrie Berk

I was tired of my running belt weighing me down, so I invested in this handheld water bottle, complete with a comfortable thumb loop that ensures the product stays in place during sprints. The brand’s specially-made SpeedFill Cap allows for quick refills on the go.

Mineral Ice Extreme Deepcold Pain Relief Cooling Spray
Carrie Berk

Revitalize tired, aching muscles with a quick spritz of menthol pain relief spray. The ingredient delivers a cooling effect that numbs a sore body and empowers you to keep trucking along. Plus, the formula sprays on clear and does not leave a greasy residue.

You can also shop the product on Amazon in the form of a gel or dry stick with similar effects.

Under Armour UA Velociti Low Women's Adjustable Cap
Carrie Berk

Shield your eyes from the sun in this lightweight, stretchy cap. It contains a built-in sweatband that soaks up your hard work, along with a low hook-and-loop closure that ensures your hair doesn’t get tangled.

Biom Body Wipes
Carrie Berk

Refresh your complexion during and after your long runs with these wipes, which can be used on both the face and body. They’re dermatologist-tested and hypoallergenic, making them a great choice for sensitive skin. Plus, kaki leaf extract neutralizes any unwanted odors after a sweat sesh.

Jersey Training Tank Top
Lululemon

Train in style. This weightless, streamlined tank lets your skin breathe while you’re out on the road and under the sun. It comes in fun colors like seafoam (light blue), pink flare (hot pink) and beach ball blue (royal blue) that are sure to draw eyes as you sprint by.

Beyond Yoga Solemate 2.5" Short
Beyond Yoga

Push the pace in the heat thanks to these breathable shorts, featuring perforated side panels for optimal ventilation. A vented back panel allows for additional airflow as you fulfill your fitness goals.
