The metro region was swamped by an unexpected deluge of rainstorms Saturday, which lowered the temperatures after a blistering week in New York, but only for a day.
“The rain is mostly wrapped up for today,” said FOX Weather Meteorologist Cody Braud. “We should see some periods of sunshine here,” he said, noting that the day will get “progressively clearer” as the clouds move out.
With the thermometer in the low 80s, the air will also remain significantly cooler than it did the past week, though with the humidity the “real feel” is still above 90.
Sunday will bring another heat wave to the region, with the temps again climbing into the low-to-mid 90s and the heat index soaring to 97. Braud said there’s a chance for some scattered showers Sunday afternoon.
But that won’t cool things down. Monday through Wednesday, expect temps to reach as high as 95.
The heat will be “peaking” Tuesday and sticking around Wednesday. “When you factor in the humidity, it’s going to feel over 100 possibly from somewhere in the mid-hundreds, like 103, 104, 105,” Braud said.
The latest wave will break overnight Wednesday, “and then continuing to go back down as we work our way through the rest of the week,” he added. Thursday and Friday are expected to top out in the mid-80s.
The National Weather Service has the NYC region under a heat advisory until 8 p.m. Monday.
The torrential rains Saturday morning and afternoon disrupted air travel at all three metro airports. At least 77 flights were cancelled at John F Kennedy Airport, at least 56 at LaGuardia and at least 59 at Newark Liberty International, according to tracking service FlightAware. By late afternoon, the schedules at all three were mostly restored.
